highland hornet

These past few days Cannon was the Highland Hornet for his class. Which means... star of the week! So we made his little poster with some pictures and then we had to follow the diagram they sent home. The inner circle is a picture of him and the 2nd circle is all the things that describe him and the things he likes. The outer square is all his hero's & people he looks up to. He came up with all of this himself....
Things he likes:
football
read
scriptures
boxing
skating
loves fires
cart wheels
wii
playing army
church
sponge bob
byu
soccer
front hand springs (which he is really good at)

His Hero's:
mom & dad
grandma's & grandpa's
austin
taylor
sophie
cooper
jesus
uncle jay
nephi
travis k.
hunter
payne
alma
It's always interesting to see how their little minds think. I am not so proud of this part of the story but I have to document it. I went to school the next day to help in the classroom and as I was sitting in there helping some kids - Cannon comes up to me and whispers in my ear that he scratched out JESUS' name on his poster! I first looked up to see it hanging on the board hoping he was pullin my leg. Indeed that was the case and I proceeded to ask why he would do such a thing and he said that some of the kids made fun of him for putting Jesus' name on his poster! My heart just HURT thinking how sad it is, that in 2nd grade you would be made fun of.... because one of your hero's is JESUS! Apparently we need to have a special "family home evening" on standing for truth and righteousness!!! I have not been able to get this off my mind. It makes me so nervous... what if he never has the courage to do this again? Am I teaching and doing everything I can to help my kids have the self esteem to stand up and choose the right? Raising kids is such a huge responsibility.
Anyhow, we love you - our little Highland Hornet - your the BEST!

That really surprises me with Cannon that he would let his peers influence him. I would say that your doing something right because most 2nd graders wouldn't put Jesus and Nephi as their heros. I just want to know where aunt Tiffs name is?!?! Maybe I'll have to work on that! He is so sweet. Congrats on being the little Hornet for the week Can Man! Love you.

He is so cute and getting so old. Those little second graders are trying to figure out who they are. We go through stuff like that with Bryson all the time. It always does make a good FHE lesson.

I have been having the same thoughts about teaching my kids to know who they are and to be o.k. if they have to stand "alone" on some things. This was a great story and I am glad you shared it.

You must be doing something right!! I love the opportunity this election has given us as adults to show our kids that we too will "Stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all places." Yes on 102!! :)

I think that's a sweet story. I'm proud that at least he put those names on originally. Poor kid-it does break your heart to think that some kids can be so mean. He'll always remember this story and somehow I think because of it, he'll actually have the desire & courage to stand up for what he believes as he gets older. What a great teaching opportunity!!
Reminds me of 6th grade when I had just moved to Gilbert & still thought New Kids on the Block were SO COOL. When I introduced myself to the class I was about to say how much I LOVED NKOTB until I heard some girl make fun of them just minutes before. I did not mention that I loved the group although I'd been planning on it. I was totally influenced by my peers-I couldn't believe it! Just a very SILLY story but one that I've always remembered and regretted. It obviously it had an impact on me though.
